Safer Roads Free From Drunk Driving

It is good that there are champions on Capitol Hill to ensure the vision of a world free from drunk driving comes to life. This from today's MADD press release:

"WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is proud to support Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) and Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) with the introduction of their legislation, the Research of Alcohol Detection Systems for Stopping Alcohol-related Fatalities Everywhere (ROADS SAFE) Act. The ROADS SAFE Act would provide reasonable funding for the research and development of vehicle technologies to end drunk driving."

It was just three years ago that MADD introduced The Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving and now another major milestone is set in motion to fund the future technology that will make this possible.

Congratulations to Sens. Udall and Corker for their commitment to safer roads across America.

Why are we not getting a commitment to ban alcohol advertising. Our senators were able to ban smoking ads.

there should be a link here that allows people to locate the relevant politicians and then be able to send an email in support of the legislation. you need to make these kinds of things really easy for people to do or else you lose a lot of them! also Facebook, Twitter links. We in 2010 now guys.

So is the idea to get this new device that they are going to fund the research of, to be installed in all new cars as they come out of the factory, or are they just still going to be meant for people convicted of DUI?

current interlocks a for convicted drunk drivers

advanced technology will one day make a vehicle unable to start by someone who is drunk (21 and older at .08+ BAC)

I support Madd and the great job they do in raising awareness for drinking drivers. A high percentage of the serious injury matters i see on a day in day out basis involve drinking drivers.

In Texas, the punishment can be severe but education and prevention are most needed. Particularly young people. Drinking driving is a leading cause of teen deaths.
