New Hampshire Man Sentenced to Prison for Drunk Driving Death of Off-Duty Police Officer

According to an article in the New Hampshire Union Leader, 22-year-old Jeffrey Dennis was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison for the death of an off-duty Hopkinton, New Hampshire police officer. Dennis had been drinking before he hit the off-duty officer's motorcycle last August.

Among the conditions of his sentence, Dennis must have an alcohol ignition interlock device installed on any vehicle he drives for up to five years.

The Concord Monitor had an article on this case:

According to the article "Dennis pleaded guilty in October 2006 to charges of DWI, speeding and resisting arrest. His license was suspended for two years and reinstated pending a year of good behavior. He was fined $500 on the drunken driving charge - the other half was suspended - and $420 for speeding. For resisting arrest, he was sentenced to 60 days in jail and a $1,000 fine, both of which were suspended. "

If Jeffrey Dennis was required to have an ignition interlock device after his October 2006 DWI, it is possible that Sean Powers death could have been prevented. We need tougher drunk driving laws.
