Walk Like MADD...Cloudy Morning, Sunshine Hearts

The morning began cloudy with a brisk chilly breeze. That didn't stop walkers from turning out for Georgia's Walk Like MADD event in Atlanta. When asked why they came, why they walk, they said:

I walk to raise money for MADD - so we can continue the work of saving lives.

I come to support others who have been victimized by drunk driving.

I walk in memory of my loved one who was killed by a drunk driver.

I walk to bring awareness to this crime. It is unacceptable. It must stop.

I come to volunteer with my friends. We want a life without having to worry about drunk drivers.

I'm here because my grandparents brought me. It's fun! I love the moon bounce and the crafts. The hotdogs are good, too.

I saw a widow of a person killed on 9/11 being interviewed last week, in anticipation of the ten-year anniversary of that dark day. As tears ran down her face while describing her husband and how much she misses him, the reporter asked with a bit of surprise, “It still hurts after all this time?”

Hurting just below the surface, after “all” this time, for a lifetime

Darkness eventually lifting

Sunshine and smiles happening again

Holding them in our hearts perpetually

Missing them without end

Loving them ceaselessly

My daughter, Alisa, was killed by a drunk driver. When she was a toddler, we used to say goodnight with these exchanges, “I love you sooo much.” “Well, I love you to the sky.” “Well, I love you to the clouds.” “I love you to the moon.” “I love you to heaven.” “Well, I love you past heaven.”

One night, little Alisa exclaimed, “Well, I love you to ‘finity!” I decided not to even try to top that! I was amazed she even knew the word infinity, let alone what it meant. So, that is now our family saying when we say goodbye to one another: “I love you to ‘finity.”

As we say their names, let us shout, I LOVE YOU TO ‘FINITY!

Remembering 9/11 (Becoming "the Someone Else")

I always thought it would happen to someone else. But on April 16, 1992, I became that someone else.

It started with my husband Joe telling me that our daughter, Alisa, had been in an accident—that’s what he called it at that time. Of course, as it turns out, it wasn’t an accident at all. The truth is, someone made a choice—a tragic choice—to drive drunk.

Nearly 10 years after Alisa died, I received another shock to my system. On September 11, 2001, my husband Joe was supposed to be at the Pentagon. When I heard about the tragedies that were occurring that day, I just knew that he had died. After all, I had already been “the someone else” once before. Luckily, Joe didn’t die that day. However, our collective sense of security did.

Ten years ago this Sunday, thousands of people became “the someone else.” Losing a loved one in a tragedy caused by another person’s decision is something too many of us can relate to. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the September 11th attacks.

It can happen to anyone at any time. Don’t become the someone who loses a loved one to a drunk driver. Become the somebody who does the something to make sure these tragedies no longer occur.

Gifts of Love

Last weekend in Virginia Beach was indescribably wonderful.

Gift of Gratitude: A ballroom full of law enforcement professionals were honored by MADD Southside Virginia, presenting awards for the officers’ commitment to saving lives in preventing drunk drivers from populating the roadways. I was taken with how excited and appreciative they were to be recognized for their hard work.

Gift of Dedication: Kaye and Bob Walsh are dedicated to saving lives after their daughter, Robin, was killed by a multiple repeat drunk driver. They both quit their jobs in order to fully pursue effective means to stop this violent crime. These two MADD volunteers began a court monitoring program that is now a model for the country. Their efforts are credited by the city of Virginia Beach for significant reduction in drunk driving last year. In addition, the Navy recognizes their contribution in reducing drunk driving on the Naval Base by 30%. That’s pretty powerful tributes to Robin’s legacy!

Gifts of Love: The volunteers gathered the following day to share and exchange ideas. The love as well as mutual respect was profound.

Krystle Burke and Alex Owens were so proud that we pulled off surprising Bob and Kaye with an award at the banquet. As Kaye said, “You made me do the ugly cry.” That’s the ultimate compliment. Krystle and Alex donate their time and talents because of their beliefs, big hearts, and desire to never be personally affected by drunk driving.

Susan Newton was severely injured by someone impaired by alcohol and drugs. She steadfastly speaks at victim impact panels in order to influence convicted drunk drivers how victims of the crime are affected. She, along with all the MADD volunteers, does whatever is needed to stop the carnage of this crime.

Bobbie's husband is a police officer. She came with her daughter just to share with us how much the ceremony and recognition meant to the officers and how much they appreciate the partnership with the MADD volunteers.

Sharon and Steve Etzell's beautiful daughter, Laura, was killed only two years ago by a drunk driver. They relay how Bob and Kaye have loved them to the healthy place they are now. Kaye has been known to have them come over just to eat a bowl of soup she makes for them and take a nap. She says, “No, we didn’t do anything – you two have done all the hard work.”

Before they left, Sharon gently handed me the most beautiful bracelet to keep. She first created many of these bracelets to donate to their Walk Like MADD as a way to raise revenue. Steve said they would be up late at night stringing the beads together. I feel so privileged. I not only will keep this gift, I am wearing it with joy and treasure it with love, always remembering Laura. I like to think she is dancing with my Alisa now, as they care for their many kitties together.

Gifts of Love: Our MADD family is so inspiring, so uplifting and so loving. I left feeling embraced and wanting more. What a gift!

Labor Day Weekend Drive Safe and Sober

We are on our way to Virginia Beach to join with MADD Southside Virginia in honoring their law enforcement officers for their efforts to fight drunk driving. Clearly the Labor Day weekend traffic has begun. Our highway safety officials are warning us to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. This symbolizes the last weekend of the summer when families frequently share the time together. The roads are jammed with cars filled with families.

We at MADD just want you to enjoy the time by planning a way home with a sober driver. My own daughter was killed when she was only 15, her life cut short before it began. Be sure no one you love has their life cut short by someone who chooses to drink and drive. Jan Withers....MADD President

Planes, Automobiles, Ferries, and Horse-Drawn Carriages

Flying into Traverse City, Michigan we seemed to float on one layer of fluffy clouds and were gently protected with a layer above. The setting sun was a cranberry red, sending its rays across the cottony sky, gleaming off Lake Michigan and making it sparkle like rose-colored diamonds. I wondered if this where the angels dance?

Any potential trepidation of driving two hours to Mackinaw City where I was to board a ferry to magical Mackinac Island flew out the window with the cool Michigan country air.

Mackinac Island is a journey back in time. Victorian homes wave to ferry travelers from the hillsides and the unmistakable smell of horses greets visitors at the dock, for no automobiles are on the island. Instead the taxi that greeted me was a horse-drawn carriage. The Grand Hotel crowns the island in graceful splendor since 1887, still pampering its guests in romantic elegant fashion.

The true joy of the trip were the wonderful people of the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan. Ken Stecker and Marcia Beatty were most gracious hosts, making sure every need (even when I had no needs - I was in heaven) were cared for.

Culminating the visit was a celebration of honorees at the PAAM Conference Banquet. I felt extremely humbled to partner with Mike Prince, Director of Michigan Highway Safety Planning, in presenting the David M. Schieber MADD Michigan Lifesaver Award to Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Athina Siringas. She successfully prosecuted a driver who was impaired with a 0.26 BAC while driving over 100 mph. He hit and killed a 24-year-old young woman traveling home from babysitting.

APA Siringas shared that the victim's mother asked her to not let her daughter die in vain. She asked her to simply seek justice. That is what APA Siringas did. She obtained a conviction of second degree murder as well as OWI causing death. For that I applaud Ms. Siringas.

On behalf of drunk driving victims, I offer our gratitude for treating the offense as a serious crime. It is still distressing that today our society too often treats killing someone while driving drunk as an accident instead of the violent and offensive crime it is.

I see the future with advanced technology putting an end to it. If that doesn't work, I like the idea of going back to the horse-drawn carriage days. What a peaceful thought.

Ordinary People - Extraordinary Activists

I called Melissa Montgomery to thank her for the uplifting evening I was privileged to share with the dedicated and inspiring folks in the South Texas Affiliate of MADD. It was obvious that they are close. I told her I could feel their mutual trust and personally felt invited into their family with open arms.

Melissa replied, "Everyone should be. There is not one person who doesn't want to be doing what we are doing. It is not a job to us. It is a passion for each one of us and we work as a team in whatever we do." What a team they are. They are everyday people doing extraordinary things!

Starting from the left, in the photo you see Angela and R.J. Dittmeier. Angela serves as a victim advocate. She exudes kindness and professionalism. Next to her is Melissa Montgomery with her husband, Thomas, standing behind her. (He says that is his role all of the time.) Melissa is the Victim Services Manager.

Next to Thomas in the back row is Rudy Rodriguez. What a delightful dedicated individual. After retiring from law enforcement, Rudy now continues his care of protecting us through the Take the Wheel Program. I am standing between Melissa and Dorene Ocamb, National MADD's brilliant and delightful marketing and communications specialist. Melissa said of Dorene, "I really like her. She is honest and dedicated and real." I agree!

Nicholas Cheatam is devoting his college semester as an intern with MADD. How lucky they are to have him. On the right is Carlos, who teaches humanities at Northwest Vista College. He was there with Nicholas and immediately expressed his desire to connect MADD with his students to help them learn the benefits of community service.

The picture is missing two very important persons in this MADD family. Carly Johnson is their gracious and very competant volunteer coordinator, and my friend, Executive Director Jennifer Northway, their illustrious leader. Jennifer made sure that in her absence I was able to spend time with her Southwest Texas MADD family.

Thank you, Jennifer. I send my thanks to each of you for devoting yourselves to helping others through MADD - be it supporting those victimized by drunk driving, or working to save lives and prevent underage drinking.

Surprising Inspiration

I am always uplifted when spending time with victim advocates. This week I was privileged to attend the NOVA, National Organization for Victims Assistance, Conference in Philadelphia. The presentations were energizing as well as educational. The true benefit was being able to share precious moments with MADD victim advocates from around the country who were able to attend the conference. There were about 10 of us, including Debbie Weir, MADD's Vice President of Victim Services and COO. Every one of these individuals exudes kindness as well as expertise. They radiate joy as well as peace. Each of them has a quiet "knowing" about them. Some have lived the experiences of victimization themselves and others are simply those wonderful souls that care and "get it" and stand by others who are victimized. The photos are of our MADD victim advocates.

The last morning I attended a class that filled my spirit. The guest speaker was Melissa Lucchesi, who shared her story of being a survivor of not one, but two rapes, six and a half years apart. She was testament to the power of the personal story. In addition to hearing her story, though, she was amazing to watch, as she wove her experiences, how she felt, how she reacted, and how she overcame. Her vulnerability was palpable and yet her strength filled the room. She was so real and she was so inspiring. One could hear her agony in her voice and her words, yet in those very same breaths, one could hear her determination and feel her power. She was able to invite her listeners into her world and allow us to be part of her experiences.

Melissa began with a quote that continues to help her on her journey. "Don't let the tragedy be the end of your story."

Melissa's story of survival can be applied to all types of victimization and that is why I share it with you. She relayed that counseling has been very helpful and continues in it today. That was not enough, though, and so she sought other methods as she moved forward in her healing. She relayed that reading memoirs of others who had similar experiences were very helpful to her - she no longer felt alone,that she was the only person with the reactions she was having. She enjoyed healing retreats and began running for physical release. She trained for a half marathon, sharing that she has a love-hate relationship with running. She appreciates it because she has to focus on it, which helps push out all the negative emotions related to her victimization.

Melissa says that "being a survivor means struggling every single day to live life fully, but not forgetting the trauma." As she shared these thoughts, the weight of what it took for her to again live life fully was actually visible. Melissa began an organization to help others who share similar experiences. It is called Voices, Incorporated. I encourage you to visit her website. She takes her peaceful power, reaches out, and invites others to join her.

Melissa quoted Maya Angelou as she closed, "The greatest agony is holding an untold story inside." Melissa shares her story to not only empower herself but to empower others. She indeed empowered me to continue to share my story in the hope of saving lives.

DADSS Turning Cars Into the Cure for Drunk Driving

Hope. I love that word. I cherish the concept. I treasure the feeling. There were so many days after my daughter was killed by a drunk driver that I felt buried in the dark hole of despair, when I could see no possibility of light. It was a difficult climb to the surface, one I could never have made on my own. One person who held the light on for me until I could see it myself was my MADD victim advocate, always there to care, listen, and support.

Anger also accompanied my despair. I was furious with our society. How could we allow this violent crime to exist? It is so preventable. It is so unnecessary. I became vocal, actively participating with MADD to get "tougher" laws, believing that would become a deterrent so more folks would decide to drive sober or have a sober designated driver. Sadly, after a few years I became disheartened. The number of America's family members killed by drunk driving stayed relatively the same. My hope was waning. In fact, I was downright discouraged.

Some people continue to drive drunk because they can. Interestingly, because all the education and deterrents and punishments do not seem to stop the drunks from driving, we now have the development of advanced technology that will turn the cars into the cure.

Today my hope is renewed. We are living in the time when the vaccine to this horrible disease of drunk driving and the destruction it leaves in its path is being created and tested. Right now....as you read this....it is happening!

JT Griffin, MADD's Senior Vice-President of Public Policy, and I recently were privileged to visit the laboratory where it is being researched in Boston. Bud Zaouk (the gentleman with the dark hair you see in the photos) graciously educated and escorted us through the facility. It was inspiring.

The technology is called Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety, or DADSS. It is a technology that will integrate a passive sensor into the vehicle, being able to detect the precise amount of alcohol in the driver's system. If that driver is at or above the legal limit of 0.08 BAC, the car simply will not start, or be driveable. The performance specifications are set at an extremely high level. It must perform absolutely accurately, precisely, reliably and work in a very short time (millisecond). This is now being tested for vehicle integration and consumers will have the option of purchasing a car with it already part of the package - much the way we had the option of having air bags in our vehicles years ago when they became available. It will not be mandated.

The DADSS is not to be confused with today's alcohol ignition interlock systems that convicted drunk drivers are sometimes required to place in their vehicles. They certainly are an effective tool in reducing drunk driving. In states requiring those for all convicted drunk drivers, fatalities caused by drunk driving have been reduced by over 30%. However, they are calibrated at a lower level of 0.02 BAC, because a person convicted of drunk driving is not allowed to have any alcohol while driving.

DADSS program is studying two prototypes. One is distant spectrometry, which uses infrared sensors that are triangulated on the person in the driver's seat. The other uses tissue spectrometry, which uses near infrared light that will perhaps be imbedded in the start button or the gear shift.

It was astonishing to have the mechanisms explained and demonstrated, indicating how very close we are to having this become part of our everyday reality...which means to me, to have the cars be the cure...which means that there will be a day when the car will simply not allow a person to drive it when impaired by alcohol at or above the legal limit.

The DADSS project is funded by our National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. MADD is now urging Congress to support the ROADS SAFE Act, which will lengthen the time of funding this important research.

THIS WILL SAVE SO MANY LIVES. This is my hope. I hope it becomes your hope. Do call or email your Congressperson and tell them you want them to support this life-saving legislation. It very well could save the life of someone you love.

Champions of Change Day at the White House

The White House is profiling Americans from across the country whose work is helping our country rise to the challenges of this century. Each week they feature stories of Americans doing extraordinary things in our communities to help innovate, educate, and build the rest of the world. They are celebrating the success of these Champions of Change, learning their stories and sharing them with the world.

Friday, I was honored to represent all the incredible people in MADD who are doing these extraordinary things to help make our communities safer and support those who have been victimized by the effects of drunk driving or drivers impaired by using other drugs with the alcohol. We also know that alcohol is the number one drug of choice among our youth and every year it kills more teens than all the other drugs combined. MADD is truly a leader not only in the country, but the world, in our approach to solutions.

Nine community leaders were honored by the White House for our work to reduce drug use and its consequences and for empowering and inspiring members of our communitites. During our visit to the White House, representatives from the Office of National Drug Control Policy hosted a discussion on how several innovative local programs are successfully working in our communities to reduce the burden drugs pose on local communities. MADD's work is recognized to be innovative and effective in this area.

It was an incredible day. We first were given a private tour of the East Wing. We then walked out the portico facing Pennsylvania Avenue and walked into the West Wing, where we were escorted to the Roosevelt Room, adjacent to the Oval Office.

I had been there once before to witness President Clinton sign the bill lowering the legal limit of alcohol in a driver's blood for determining drunk driving from 0.10 BAC to 0.08 BAC. I was flooded with memories of our MADD President at the time, Millie Webb and her daughters, Brenda Frazier (whose precious 10-year-old Ashley was killed by a driver impaired at 0.08 BAC), and others with whom I waited in that very room before meeting the President. I noted my emotions were similar. I am not in the least bit complacent about the privilege of being there. BUT, the reason we were there is why my emotions filled my spirit. It was because there are so many good people working so very hard to help make our communities safer, to help individuals have more productive and positive lives, and to save lives. Both times, every single person in that room was there for those reasons.

We sat down at the conference table, at the very table and in the very chairs many world leaders have sat, and began a wonderful roundtable discussion of what our organizations are doing. Director Kerlikowski, of ONDCP, led the discussion. Those present shared amazing things they have done to transform their communities and strengthen individuals lives. The stories were diverse - from Lt. Dan Gannon who implements drug market interventions in communities and helps local citizens reclaim their environment - to LaKisha Bryant, Director of Girls Inc. in Albany, GA, who provides programs and services to help girls, ages 6 -18, to be self-sufficient, responsible and contributing members of society. I have to share with you that not only were they appreciative of our support for people who have been victimized by alcohol and drug impairment, but they were very impressed with the details of our Power of Parents iniative as well as the details of our Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving.

We needed to conclude at a precise time, because the room was scheduled for another use right after we finished. As the director quipped, "It is coming from someone with a much higher pay grade than mine." We learned that the President was having a luncheon in there following us. I cannot deny that I was disappointed he didn't just pop his head in to say a quick hello....grin.

The day didn't end there. We walked past the "Situation Room" to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. The floors were black and white diamond-shaped marble. The door frames are trimmed with ornate Greek key design and the door knobs all have the insignia of each of the military branches. We waited in that not-too-boring environment for each person to be individually interviewed for videos to be posted on the White House website. The interviews took place in the Secretary of War Room located directly across the hall from the Vice-President's office. That room was indeed not-too-shabby itself. The walls were actually gold lame framed in dark ornate wood trim. We sat on antique chairs atop a huge oriental carpet for the interview. It was as if history whispered anecdotes from every corner.

It was an inspiring day with inspiring people doing inspiring work. I quote the White House blog on Champions of Change: "The best ideas come from American people. Everyone has a story to tell. Everyone has a part to play. Our country's success is built on the fact that working together we do big things... Together we will win the future."

Drunk Driving Can Be a Form of Child Endangerment

Last week was a whirlwind of activities. I was honored to meet with Ray LaHood, Secretary of Transportation and David Strickland, Administrator of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Not only do they clearly care about the pain that drunk driving causes so many people in this country, they also are inspiring leaders seeking science-driven approaches to eliminate drunk driving. Indeed, they support MADD's Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving and when we celebrate the 5th anniversary of our Campaign on Nov. 16th, Secretary LaHood and Administrator Strickland will be present.

Our public policy team and I also met with the Honorable Debbie Hersman, Director of the National Transportation Safety Board and the Honorable Mark Rosekind, NTSB Board Member. For those who don't know, NTSB investigates major crashes, such as airline and rail crashes. They also make safety recommendations based on proven research and are committed to working with MADD to make endorsements of science-driven methods that reduce the dangers of impaired driving on our roads.

The moments that are always the most significant to me are ones in which I am privileged to connect with others who don't necessarily have prominent positions and are courageously working to make a difference. Many of you are following our Carl McDonald in his blog, "In Search of Warmer Summers," as he cycles across the country with his sister, Sallie. Each day they dedicate their ride to a person who has been killed or injured by drunk driving. Yesterday, they reached their finish line in Astoria, Oregon. They rode 4,769 miles. Amazing!

Carl touches my soul daily as I open a new entry in his adventure. Carl's precious little daughter, Carlie, was killed while traveling in the vehicle with an intoxicated driver. Even now as I write this my heart is filled with tears of empathy for him, knowing he now endures a lifetime without her. Too many of us live this same nightmare. We connect with Carl in a very real way. I am also filled with admiration and inspiration as he turns his energy into making a difference so others might survive.

He says he is going to continue blogging. He has committed to raising $20,000 for MADD as he raises awareness of drunk driving dangers during their excursion. Ron Claiborne, a reporter with ABC World News and anchor of the weekend edition of Good Morning America, met up with Carl and is doing a news segment about Carl's journey and his message. (We will make every effort to get the date and time it will air to you when we find out. Keep watching for it.) Ron then spoke with me to learn more about this topic of child endangerment. MADD considers driving impaired with a child passenger to be a form of child abuse.

Before that interview, I called my Iowa friend, Julie VanderWel, to ask if I could share her story with Ron. Her precious Gavin was killed when he was just ten years old while riding in the car with an adult, who Julie said had a blood alcohol concentation at twice the legal limit. He drove the wrong way down the road, hitting an oncoming car. He had two prior DUI's. Gavin's story is why MADD is working so hard to have every state in the nation require ignition interlocks for all convicted offenders. You are looking at little Gavin Wrather's picture above.

I first met Julie at our 30th Anniversary National Conference in Washington, DC last summer. She was alone and said she felt lost. Her heartbreak was palpable. We became instant friends and inseparable those few days and knew our friendship was permanent. Watching everyone in our MADD family embrace her with love and hold her up was so fulfilling. Nothing compares with the love, the mutual support, and the hope it offers. Julie told me that what she received at that conference gave her the hope to go on.

Gavin died two years ago on July 26th. When Julie answered the phone, I asked the usual, "How are you?" I could hear the struggle in her voice as she replied, "Anxious. The second anniversary of Gavin's death is approaching and I dread it. I am having a rough time. Sometimes I wonder if the anticipation is worse than the actual day."

I did tell Ron Claiborne about Gavin in the interview. Carl and Carlie, Julie and Gavin are why we make a loud noise. Did you know that 2 out of 3 children killed by a drunk driver are in the same vehicle with that driver? We cry out demanding that our society steps up to protect our children from this violent crime.

Julie is so right about the anticipation. Weeks leading up to that horrible day can be agonizing. My experience has been to make a plan for that day. Many of us who first tried to avoid thinking about it often say that we suffer less when we acknowledge it by doing something special. I have friends with whom we go to the cemetery each year, send up balloons, share fun stories about their loved one and if the occasion happens to be their birthday, we eat birthday cake. My point is, whatever works for you, just do it.

Our strength comes from our pain. Our strength becomes even more powerful when we speak with one voice - when our nation hears our united call to protect our families. Carl McDoanld, in his unassuming quiet manner, is helping to make our nation take notice. Julie, too, is now making a difference. Along with MADD, she has begun a campaign in Iowa, by erecting billboards with Gavin's picture and message: "THINK before you drink and drive. One Less Smile.....Gavin 1999-2009." Julie, in her unassuming quiet manner is helping to make our nation take notice. Carl and Julie are amazing, as are so many of you speaking in this united voice. Let us never stop until drunk driving is eliminated.

Hello and Goodbye

I offer my gratitude to our outgoing President Laura Dean-Mooney. She has crossed the country - the globe actually - effectively representing all of us in MADD. Her dedication and sacrifice these past three years is deeply appreciated. You have been a powerful voice for us, Laura. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Today is July 7th, my daughter, Alisa's, birthday. She was killed by an underage drunk driver 15 years after her birth, just 3 months before she turned 16. It feels absolutely perfect to me that I connect with you today for the first time as your new president. The day she was born was the launch of new joy in my heart. She was sunshine personified. As a little girl she was delightful giggles and dance. As she grew up she was gracious kindness and graceful dance. Here you see a picture of her in a rehearsal.

Today she would be 35. I wonder how she would have changed. Would she have a career in dancing? Would she have children? Would her hair still be long? What would she look like now? My friend Mary Klotzbach's son, Matthew, was killed when they were hit by a drunk driver in 2001. She says she wishes so much she could have current pictures of him. The photos of newly created memories abruptly stopped the day they died. We wish so much we could update our photo albums with snapshots of new memories.

I called MADD for help when I was paralyzed with pain. The sorrow was excruciating and the anger overwhelming. What I received was not only help, but I began to see glimpses of hope. When I could not stop crying, I was offered a kind heart. When I could not speak, my MADD advocate became my voice. At the same time, I was watching others in MADD - others who had experienced similar loss or who had been severely injured. They were their own voice or spoke for those who couldn't. They modeled strength I didn't have in my most broken days - but I wanted it - I wanted to get there someday. They were my beacons of hope.

So, as time moved forward, so did I. The day Alisa died, a piece of my heart died. I am forever different. Now, though, I know she moves forward with me. Along the journey so many people in MADD were first my beacons of hope and became my heroes. I watched them support one another. I watched them fight to save lives. I watched them courageously turn their pain into power. They taught me well, for I followed their example.

Today I am humbled to represent you, so many of whom are my close friends, and knowing I will meet so many of you who will become my friends. I feel we already know each other. We will touch one another's hearts. We are bound as a family in MADD. We are together to save lives. We are together to honor and support those who have been vicitimized by this violent crime, to protect our youth from the dangers of underage drinking, and to eliminate this scourge of drunk driving. I know this is a noble goal. I know this is an attainable goal. Today, I am humbled, knowing we will move forward together.

Father's Day...thanking dad's of all kinds

This Sunday we celebrate dads of many types--there are dads who are finished raising their kids, dads who have stepchildren, dads who no longer have their children through divorce or death, and dads who are also mothers.

My friend, Jeff, is a law enforcement officer who has full custody of his kids and he is a terrific, single dad. Their mom is still living, but she has some problems that keep her from parenting. I admire Jeff so much because he works to protect our streets from drunk drivers and other criminals, but he manages to work in quality time with his son and daughter.

I think of the lost opportunity to ever really get to know my dad who died of a heart attack at age 43--I was only 11 years old. I think of my daughter who never got to know her daddy Mike because a drunk driver killed him when she was an 8 month old infant. Both of these situations are terrible, but they are not uncommon. Many, many dads never really get to be dads for very long either because of the choices they make or the choices that others make.

This Father's Day, I celebrate all of you dads who belong to MADD because of the death of your child(ren), spouse, significant other, mother, dad or someone else you love. Thank you for being mothers--Mothers Against Drunk Driving. You are all helping us work to reach our vision--a nation without drunk driving.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you who are called Mom, Madre, Mommy, Mother, Mother-in-law, or you are a "stand in" Mom. It is the greatest joy in my life to be called Madre or Momma by my daughter!

This is a picture of me with my Mom last Easter and I am so thankful that she is still with us at age 81. But, I know this is a hard weekend for many of you who have lost your Mom, your child or your children.

Many will be mourning their moms or their daughters who never got the chance to be a mom or their only child--the one who made them a Mom. Some single dads--who are now also mothers--will be mourning the loss of a wife and reliving grief at a time when so many celebrate their mother/wife.

No matter how the loss occurred--through a drunk driving crash or otherwise--it is a time to reflect on motherhood and what that means to us.

MADD was started by Candace Lightner after her daughter, Cari, was killed by a drunk driver. Thanks to Candace, we are a 30 year old organization that serves a victim every 10 minutes, that works to keep families safe through education and prevention and that celebrates the heroes who keep our roads safer. We all can be mothers!

We had a great kick off to our first annual PowerTalk 21 day last Thursday! But if you missed that day, I want you to know that any day--the 21st of May for instance--is a great day to start the conversation with your teen.

Research shows that the earlier one starts drinking alcohol, the more likely they are to become alcohol dependent and drive drunk. That alone should be reason enough to make sure we do our best to keep our teens alcohol free.

It's time for Legislatures to act

It's "Public Policy season" across the country as most legislatures are in session. We've had some limited success this "season" and as a result, lives will be saved, injuries prevented and many will have to "blow before they go"!

Tomorrow, the Oklahoma House Appropriations & Budget Committee will hold a hearing at 4:00 PM on The Erin Swezey Act. If you live in Oklahoma, please call or email your elected officials and ask them to support this bill to require ignition interlocks on all convicted offenders cars. The bill also has a provision for an endorsement on the driver's license that would indicate they are convicted DUI offenders.

Erin Elizabeth Swezey was killed by a drunk driver on April 4, 2009. Just two short years ago (which probably feels like an eternity to her family and friends), Erin was living a great, full life. Two weeks before her death she penned these words in her journal:

Happy Valentine's Day?

With all the loss in the world, we get desensitized to hurt. I think we are all guilty of reading about a horrible car crash or murder or natural disaster and thinking, "Gee, that is so sad." But by later in the day, we've moved on and don't even think about the repercussions following those tragedies, unless they happen to us directly.

Today, lovers all over the world celebrate Valentine's Day. For many of those we serve, this will be the first Valentine's Day without their beloved. It will be a day of pain...a day of remembering...a day we wish would hurry up and disappear. Those "firsts" that you have to go through (not, ignore)are very difficult and seem like fuel is being added to the fire for many.

Others are enjoying the day and planning for ways to honor their someone special while you may be pulling the covers over your head as you cry your eyes out. That is OK. That is normal. Grief is a process...a long and difficult journey to go through.

So my wish for you on this day of love, is that you know that you are loved. Even if you feel completely alone and ache for your loved one, you are thought about by those of us at MADD. You are thought about by one who has walked in your shoes...me.

MADD joins Secretary of DOT & NHTSA Administrator at press conference

This morning, I had the pleasure of joining Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and NHTSA Administrator David Strickland to speak at a press conference in Waltham, MA about the exciting progress that has been made in the development of technology that might one day eliminate drunk driving!

We have renewed hope that the cure for drunk driving is on the horizon. Turning cars into the cure is now a reality that might be seen in our automobiles in the next 8-10 years. The folks at Qinetiq are working very hard to test two potential technologies that could prevent the car from being operational if the driver is at or above .08 BAC.

Human subject testing (testing the potential technologies in a controlled laboratory setting as the person is given measured amounts of alcohol at specific times) has already taken place. The results have been very encouraging and I'll write more about that at a later time.

Our Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving hits the five year mark this fall. Imagine...in less than 5 years from now, a research car that is equipped with one or both of these technologies will have been operational for several years and we will be even closer to our goal of eliminating drunk driving.

I am more passionate about the potential to get this cure in cars than I ever have been before! It is possible!

Let's all keep our focus on making sure that Congress knows we need this technology to not only save lives and prevent injuries, but to save our country millions of dollars in damages from drunk driving.

Too Drunk??

In Saturday's Washington Post there was an article about the DADSS (Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety) and the potential technologies that NHTSA and the
Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety (ACTS) are looking into. Check it out at the link above...

Basically, two types of technologies are being explored to find out if they will work accurately, reliably and not hassle those of us who never drive drunk. These technologies might include a set of sensors in the car that would detect if you were at a .08 BAC+ in less than a SECOND! If you were, your car would not be drivable. It is also important to point out that these devices must aim to function without maintenance for at least 10 years and be inexpensive.

Rob Strassburger of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers said it best: "We want the public to understand the need (for this potentially lifesaving equipment)and how they benefit."

We've all got to spread the word and let the public know that this potential technology is a very good thing and has the potential to save over 8,000...8,000 lives! We need Congress to put about $12M/per year into this. That is cheap compared to the cost of drunk driving currently. If you get a minute, please go to www.madd.org and take action by asking your member of Congress to support the ROADS SAFE act.

Well here we are on New Year's Eve and there is a lot of talk about parties and celebrating tonight. While you're planning your celebrations, it's important to keep safety in mind. Law enforcement officers all over the U.S. will be out in force watching for impaired drivers and taking a bunch of them to jail. You've probably seen the DOT commercials for "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest." Thank a law enforcement officer if you see one while you are out tonight. They give up a lot to work these holidays!

As we all know, New Year's Eve can be one of the most dangerous nights of the year because of drunk and impaired driving. But it doesn't have to be!

Simply by planning to use a taxi, a sober, designated driver or just staying home to party, you can lower your risks. Of course, we have to be watching out on the roads for those crossing our paths who didn't make safe plans to get home and being alert to making moves to get out of their way.

MADD wants everyone to have fun tonight and you can do that safely. Always drive sober and buckled up.

And about those resolutions...

I've got some of my own that include the usual "eating right and exercising," as well as re-reading some literature classics in 2011. What about you? December...the most wonderful time of the year? For many victim/survivors December isn't the most wonderful time of the year.

I remember well the December of 1991. My husband, Mike, had just been killed in late November and then all of the sudden--everywhere I turned it seemed--people were jovial, celebrating, shopping, and going to parties. I wanted to shout, "Hey, don't you see what I'm going through?? How can you be so happy around me?" I went to the local mall because I felt like I had to buy our daughter something for Christmas. I wasn't there very long at all when I felt like I was being smothered...like I was having a panic attack. I had to leave.

Of course these strangers didn't know what was going on inside of me. I looked like any other young Mom at the mall. But inside, the grief was excruciating.

And so here we are in December. Many victims of drunk driving crashes are going through just what I went through. Yes, it may have been years ago when their loved one was killed by a drunk driver, but they are still hurting. Or, it may have been since last December that their loved one was killed and this is the first holiday season without them. And seeing people having fun hurts them. They wish their son/daughter/mom/dad/other loved one was with them to usher in the shopping season or eat cookies or decorate their home. And the reminder of how they died is brought to the surface once again.

Take time to breathe and reflect this December. And remember, this will be behind us in 30 days.

Day of Remembrance

This coming Sunday, November 21, I'll remember my late husband, Mike Dean, who was killed on this day in 1991 at the young age of 32. I think of him everyday as I do my work for MADD, but the anniversary is a bittersweet day of remembrance.

The world will also mark November 21 this year as the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDOR). This is the fifth year of setting aside the 3rd Sunday in November to honor all those who are killed in road traffic crashes. Some 1.3 million people lose their lives each year in traffic crashes worldwide.

The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon released a statement containing these words:

"Many tragedies can be avoided through a set of proven, simple measures that benefit not only individuals and families but society at large.

Recognition is growing about the critical development and public health challenge posed by road traffic deaths and injuries. This greater awareness has prompted governments and their partners to step up their response. Earlier this year, the UN General Assembly declared the first-ever “Decade of Action for Road Safety,” providing an opportunity for global action.

I call on Member States, international agencies, civil society organizations, businesses and community leaders to ensure that the Decade leads to real improvements. As a step in this direction, governments should release their national plans for the Decade when it is launched globally on 11 May 2011."

Drunk driving is one of the leading causes of roadway deaths and it is 100% preventable. Please do your part by never driving drunk, buckling up and keeping your eyes only on the road.

A chapter in my life closes

Nineteen years ago next month, my life changed forever. Last Wednesday, October 20, a chapter in my life was permanently closed when as I held her hand, my first mother-in-law, Gwende Dean, died at age 75.

Drunk driving effects more than just those killed or injured in the crash. It effects everyone in the extended circle for years and years. Especially when the one killed was an only child.

My husband, Mike Dean, was that only child who was killed in a crash on November 21, 1991 at the young age of 32. Mike and his mom were close since she had raised him as a single mom. At the time of Mike's death, we had only been married two and a half years and our daughter was only 8 months old. Immediately following his death, I became her replacement child and I felt a great obligation to look after her. I have tried to do that for the last nineteen years.

When Gwende was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2007 and later with a small brain tumor, we knew the prognosis was fatal. She fought valiantly and never complained. Her goal was to see our daughter finish high school. She did live to see that, although she was too weak to attend the ceremony.

My family moved back to Texas earlier this year in some part to be closer to her as her life slipped away. Many trips were made to visit with her before she got to the point where she couldn't talk or use her motor skills any longer. Calls were made frequently to check with her caregiver to see how she was doing.

When I received the call on Oct. 17 that she had stopped taking food or water, I packed my car for the 4 hour drive north to her home. For over two days I sat beside her bed and read her the sports page because her team, the Texas Rangers, were finally in the ALCS playoffs. I had the TV on to the game last Monday evening in case she might hear any of it even though she was semi-comatose. I wanted her to know that her team was going to the World Series for the first time ever--so much so, that I told her they were in the Series even though they weren't at that point!

Gwende, or G.G. as we affectionately called her, breathed her last breath and stepped into eternity at 9:55 a.m. last Wednesday. She was finally reunited with her son--the one she loved and had missed so desperately for the last 19 years!

People who choose to drive drunk never consider how lives are impacted. They never stop to think that a Mom had to live with the grief of losing her only child. They never stop to think about a little girl who never had a chance to know her daddy Mike. They never stop to think that the ultimate stress that is put on a body through the grief process might--I believe DID--lead to cancer in a grieving mother.

Grief regurgitated...grief re-lived. A chapter in our lives has closed with the death of Gwende Dean. May she finally rest in peace.

Henderson's Light by Jack Torry

Author Jack Torry has written a book that you might want to read. "Henderson's Light" tells of a crash that happened in 1965 and how the crash still lingers in the minds of many (as many of you can relate to).

Last week, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood blogged about Mr. Torry's book saying, "On a chilly January evening in Birmingham, Michigan, a Buick Skylark with five teenagers was struck head-on by a Ford Galaxy driven by a young man who had been drinking. Three of those teenagers and the driver of the Ford were killed. It was 1965.

The stunned responses of those who knew the three kids included everything you might expect in 2010. "They had their whole lives in front of them." "A bright future." "Such good kids."

30th Anniversary President's Awards Dinner

Last night, we concluded our 30th anniversary conference with the annual President's Awards dinner. It was a great night that celebrated our past, honored our founder, Candace Lightner--who we were thrilled to have with us--and recognized outstanding volunteers, staff and partners with President's awards. The winners have served victims, raised funds, served as outstanding prosecutors and judges, been outstanding employees and arrested hundreds of drunk drivers in their role as law enforcement officers.

Prior to the dinner, we unveiled HOPE SOARS, a beautiful, permanent art installation that celebrates and remembers the lives of those injured or killed in drunk driving crashes. This work, created by West Texas artist Pam Davis, reminds us of the fragility of life while illustrating the power and strength of our collective spirit. Each canvas was prepared with acrylic paint and paper butterflies were individually attached at intervals to give the illusion of a flutter. Images of victims/survivors on each butterfly were chosen at random from photos submitted by attendees at the Conference.

This conference has been outstanding and has renewed our fight to eliminate drunk driving, serve more victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. We need you to join us! Contact our offices to see how you can be a part of this exciting organization.

What a great day on Capitol Hill!

Today over 350 MADD activists and supporters rallied on Capitol Hill to celebrate our 30th anniversary. It was awesome to have so many victim/survivors and concerned citizens gather on the lawn of the Capitol to let Congress know that we are sick and tired of drunk driving and we need them to pass the ROADS SAFE act and the ignition interlock bills NOW.

Joining us for the rally were US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood as well as Senators Frank Lautenberg, Charles Schumer and Tom Udall. Also speaking to the crowd were Congressmen Jim Oberstar, John Sarbanes, and Pete DeFazio. All of these MADD supporters spoke of the wonderful work that MADD has done, as well as their personal commitments to help us eradicate this 100% preventable crime and turn cars into the cure.

Victim/survivors held up photos of their loved ones killed in drunk driving crashes or of themselves if they are injured victims.

Lenny Rosado of NY, Hollywood Ruch of Pennsylvania and Nina Walker of California shared their personal stories of loss and further showed why we must stop the epidemic of drunk driving.

We are looking forward to another great day tomorrow as we honor law enforcement and our wonderful volunteers at breakfast. We're off to a great start!

MAD With One "D"

I've just started to be calm enough to post this blog entry. For the last two weeks I've been mad with one "d"...because it happened again.

Roy McConnell and his 3 sons were killed two weeks ago by a suspected underage, drunk driver who blew through a red light in St. Petersburg, FL and violently crashed into Roy's car. All of his kids were with him in the car. All of their wives/girlfriends were waiting at the beach house for them to return. They never came home.

I knew Roy from church. He was a fine drummer, triathlete and family man. He told me more than once that he admired my passion for stopping drunk driving. He was a friend of MADD on Facebook. He believed in the good in people and was a strong man of faith.

This crash was 100% preventable just as every other drunk driving crash is! Someone made a choice to drive after drinking and he is now accused of killing my friend and his 3 sons...devastating a family and a community.

If we do nothing, if we say nothing, then we change nothing. Please help us end this violent crime.

High school athletes are more likely to drink underage

Today's article in USA Today entitled, "Website warns athletes that alcohol can lead to prison, death" is a good reminder about the dangers of underage drinking. The article describes how the New Mexico Activities Association is launching a website (lifeofanathlete.com) to remind high school athletes about the dangers of alcohol abuse. On the website, the story of Gabe Gurule is told. Gabe, a former three-sport athlete at an Albuquerque high school who was being recruited by several Big 12 schools, drove drunk on Thanksgiving 2005 and killed three innocent people. He's now spending his time in the Central NM Correctional Facility in Los Lunas.

Perhaps the most telling part of the article is to point out that the program stresses to high school athletes that even occasional alcohol use can have an impact. They say, "A single night of partying, according to the American Athletic Institute, can undo two weeks of training. It can also have more serious results." Gabe proved that.

For parents of high school athletes (or even non-athletes), this is a good reminder of why we must continually talk with our teens. Please start the conversation if you haven't already. It may be your teen you prevent from becoming a victim or a prisoner in a correctional facility.

Don't Blow It!

Yesterday I had the privilege of speaking at a press conference hosted by Rockland County, NY District Attorney, Thomas Zugibe, to announce that on Aug. 15 the mandatory ignition interlock (in car breathalyzer) law for all DWI offenders takes effect. The "Don't Blow It" messaging shows a parent blowing into an interlock as a child looks on. Can you imagine having to do that and explain to your kid why you are going to continue occasionally blowing into this device as you take the trip to town or to your child's school?

New York has made it clear--it won't tolerate drunk driving. Leandra's Law is named for Leandra Rosado who was killed in a drunk driving crash last October in NYC. Her dad, Lenny, joined in the press conference and explained that anyone who drives drunk with a child under 16 years old, will face a felony. Rockland County Sheriff James Kralik gave credit to our founder, Candace Lightner, who singlehandedly took on drunk driving after the death of her daughter, Cari. The Sheriff talked about how early on in his career, police officers would take the keys away from a drunk driver, let them sleep it off for a couple of hours and then go back and give them the keys. He stressed that ever since MADD was founded, officers don't do that. Deputy Secretary for Public Safety, Mary Kavaney, stressed that every child deserves a designated driver--and she is so right!

MADD has made a difference in the lives of so many. We've gotten laws like this passed all over the country and we'll keep on working in those states that don't take drunk driving seriously in order to save lives and prevent injuries. We'd love to have your help!

Interlock Wave Surges and Protects Roadways

Last week, new ignition interlock laws went into effect. Wisconsin now requires ignition interlocks for first time convicted drunk drivers with a BAC of .15, repeat offenders and for those who refuse a BAC test. California requires interlocks for all offenders in four counties: Alameda, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Tulare.

California joins 13 other states with laws requiring ignition interlocks for all first time convicted DUI offenders. Wisconsin joins nine other states requiring these devices for first time convicted drunk drivers with a BAC of .15 or greater. In 2007, North Carolina enacted a law similar to Wisconsin. The state of Washington has a remarkable goal to reduce traffic deaths to zero by 2030 and they are ahead of their goal! John Quiñones Co-Anchor of ABC News Magazine show Primetime has been hosting a segment called "What would you do?" which tests how individuals respond to ethical dilemmas through hidden camera scenarios. Last Friday night, his test involved a woman asking passerbys to blow into a ignition interlock for her.

The segment perpetuated some common misnomers:

Blowing into the device isn't simple. It usually involves performance of a specific sequence of exercises that are taught to offenders and not easily replicated to just any passerby.
Many new devices include cameras. The device takes a picture of the person blowing into the device. This information is transmitted to probation officers as part of their monthly report.
Most devices require running retests. Driver must often provide breath tests at regular intervals, preventing drivers from asking a sober friend to start the car. If a driver fails a running retest, the vehicle’s horn will honk and/or the lights will flash to alert law enforcement.

The failure to make these points aside, the segment provided stunning proof that some people still treat drunk driving cavalierly. It also proved that laws and enforcement of those laws remain a major deterrent to this crime.

We know that there are brave law enforcement officers who even now are fighting for their lives in hospitals. I especially salute Corporal Andy Pringle of the West Virginia State Patrol for his valiant fight in ICU since April 24. He was hit by an alleged drunk driver while he was conducting a traffic stop. His wife and 3 kids, family, fellow LEO's and friends all over the country are praying for his complete recovery.

We have gotten a lot of questions over the years about our name and its perceived exclusivity. Why are we just Mothers Against Drunk Driving?

The fact is, drunk driving affects fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, grandmothers, friends, coworkers, and the list goes on and on. While our founders were grieving mothers, MADD prides itself on reaching out to any individual affected by this tragic crime. In fact, our previous National President Glynn Birch was a father, not a mother.

Several years ago, we even looked into changing our name to address this very problem. But you know what we found out? In order to restablish the amount of awareness and public trust built up in our name, we would need to invest millions of dollars and countless years. In the end, we'd rather spend the generous donations of our supporters on the actual prevention of the crime rather than a rebranding campaign.

So instead, we try to refer to ourselves as MADD more than Mothers Against Drunk Driving. After all, we're all capable of being MADD.

So, I went online to see what was being said about spring break and drinking and ran across this blog post that I could relate to, except the age of the writer.

With three little ones myself, the messages in the media including TV and film tread lightly usually on underage drinking. If we all grow up with TV and movies how much of our subconscious takes in the messages? It seems drinking underage is part of college, part of high school parties, part of media and unless teens have strong, positive self esteem and role models, they may be persuaded to "fit in."

Now, down the road, after the teen enjoys spring break too much, and somehow consistently drinks and graduates high school or college and the real world settles in, what happens? Many are then addicted to alcohol in some degree and may have additional troubles including drunk driving, holding down a job or staying healthy.

A little underage drinking is too much. Once our society and all adults in it believe this too, spring break might just go back to beach blanket bingo and Frankie and Annette days--Not!

Don't have the answer to budget woes but certainly endangering more people by letting criminals out early can't be the answer. We now have 12 states with ignition interlock laws for convicted drunk drivers and have new technology being explored to stop drunk driving all together. There is a lot being said about cell phones and driving and texting and driving lately. Everyone seems to agree that all of these "(fill in the blank) and driving" things are not very good when everyone should be paying attention to the road. We all want to arrive home safely. We all want our families and friends protected from senseless tragedies. Tragedies are bad enough but when they could have been prevented there is another level of anger and grief that is hard to recover from. Could be that everyone is just trying to squeeze too much in during a 24 hour day and time in the car seems like a perfect place to fill in the gaps. We need to figure out the balance of when our choices that may appear in one way to simplify things and when they may actually put us in harm's way and end our lives or someone else's.

Recently a television show starring Steven Segal comes to our attention because it allegedly portrays law enforcement officers giving breaks to drunk driving offenders. The name of the show is “The Lawman” and it’s airing on the A&E Network.

I’ve looked at three episodes and I am stunned. This is a “reality” show based on Segal riding shotgun on some sort of mall-cop party patrol with the good old boys down in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana where it appears the sheriff’s deputies are behaving more like middle school hall monitors than law enforcement officers.

We support our law enforcement officers nationwide. It’s a natural partnership for us and them. However, partnerships are two-way streets and the portrayal of “law enforcement” seen on this show is some sort of relic from over 30 years ago when drunk driving was exacting the heaviest toll on our nation’s roadways. This isn’t law enforcement, this is a joke.

In three separate episodes, three different occasions arise where officers come in contact with impaired drivers – one involving a fairly serious injury collision complete with a witness from the bar the driver just vacated before overturning his car and ejecting his friend during the rollover. These guardians of the law failed to request blood tests on the driver.

I might think that was an editing error until we focus in on two more people who are deemed “too drunk to drive” by these clowns, but allowed to leave in a taxi or walk away without standardized field sobriety testing and without proper arrest decisions being attempted.

I called Colonel Fortunado of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and spoke to him about the behavior evidenced during these episodes. He spoke to me about “officer’s discretion” and the lack of state troopers available to evaluate the drivers, while assuring me that they make an arrest of a “really drunk guy” in a future episode.

I’m sure they do. No doubt they have to…because we are watching.

Drunk Driving Laws Only Good if Enforced

If you have ever caught The Lawman on cable television, it is pretty interesting. The real life war that cops face every day and night on the road. MADD works with enforcement across the country and praises them most of the time.

We were alarmed to see a couple of episodes show drunk drivers being let go. While we get it is meant to entertain and watching a drunk guy talk about how Steven Seagal couldn't beat Jackie "Shan" in funny, it is not funny that the enforcement team never tested the driver or used police training for establishing cause to test. There were all kinds of signs that should have warranted a breath or blood test and none were given.

This is the wrong message to be sent 30 years after our country declared a war on drunk driving. The aim should be: find, arrest and convict drunk drivers or they will find and possibly kill or injure you. MADD is disappointed because real lawmen don't tell drunk drivers to walk it off or get a ride home. We've been in touch with their team and have shared our concerns as well as those of others that have called us about our POV.

Today's Wall Street Journal reports that the U.S. Tax Court last week allowed the driver of a car to write off thousands of dollars of damage after he totalled it while under the influence. The reason? Driving after drinking doesn't amount to willful negligence in itself.

MADD's Campaign to Eliminate Marks 3rd Anniversary

Just a few weeks ago, MADD achieved yet another success in its Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving with the passage of a first offender interlock law in New York. The victory comes on the heels of the Campaign's third anniversary.

In 3 years, MADD has:

Passed statewide requirements for interlocks at .08 BAC in 12 states and a major pilot program covering four counties in California.
Facillitated the establishment of a cooperative research agreement between the U.S. Department of Transportation and the world’s leading automobile companiesand design prototypes are expected by the summer of 2010.
Spread the word about the potential of technology as an antidote to the scourge of drunk driving.

Cali couple brings designated driver — but he's 13

Wisconsin Drunk Driving Laws Still a Joke

Wisconsin - the only state in the country that doesn't consider drunk driving a crime at first blush - failed to pass a bill to remedy that situation last week. Not so coincidentally, a police chief in the state as well as state Rep. Jeff Wood were pulled over and cited for drunk driving.

The arrest was the police chief's first on charges of driving while in intoxicated, but not so for Rep. Wood. Last week's arrest marks his second OWI arrest this year, and fourth overall.

Wood already faces third-offense charges stemming from a Dec. 12 arrest after he crashed through a highway sign with an alleged blood-alcohol level of 0.15. Wood was also convicted of drunken driving in 1990 and 1991.

In his latest arrest Wood had trouble completing field sobriety tests, but a preliminary breath test for alcohol in his system was 0.00. Troopers did find prescription drugs and cough syrup in his car.

Clearly, by not making OWI a crime on first offense, the cultural ambivilance to driving while intoxicated continues in the state.

When Will Responsible Drinking Be 'En Vogue'?

At this point, nearly every major news outlet has published the news: women are getting more DUIs and men are getting less.

Each story reaches a different conclusion as to the hows and whys behind this new trend. Los Angeles "mommy blogger" and self-proclaimed recovering alcoholic Stefanie Wilder-Taylor thought like many that she was a part of a new wave of moms asserting their ability to have small kids and still be hip and cool with a cosmopolitan in hand.

It seems that for women a glass of wine is the ultimate accessory and attempts to drink responsibly are passé.

MADD mom Misty Moyse recalled that at one wine-infused party for new parents at the school her children attended, she stood up and asked the group if anyone needed a designated driver.

"Boy, that was a real party killer," she said. I am sure it was. After all, being a responsible drinker is so last year.

Today on my Google Alerts I received not one, not two, but THREE separate stories about recent drunk driving arrests where children were present in the offender's car:

In the same state that experienced the horrific Taconic Parkway drunk driving crash just a few months ago, a New York man was arrested last Wednesday after Town Police said he was driving drunk with three children—ages 5, 7 and 9—in his car.
The same news story reports that two days later, another New York man was arrested after police said he was driving drunk with his 14-year-old son and another boy in the car.
In Minnesota, couple jailed for driving drunk with seven unbuckled kids in the backseat.

What is going on? Doesn't every child deserve a designated driver?

Former Kentucky and Texas A & M Basketball Coach Arrested for DUI

WLEX-TV in Lexington reports that former Kentucky and Texas A & M basketball coach Billy Gillispie was pulled over in a white Mercedes with Texas tags around 2:45 a.m. this morning after someone reported seeing the car driving erratically.

The arrest marks at least the third time Gillispie has been cited for driving under the influence. In 1999, he was arrested and charged with DUI in Oklahoma. He later pled guilty to a lesser charge. In 2003, during Gillispie's first years as coach at the University of Texas-El Paso, he was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after driving the wrong way down a one-way street. Those charges were later dropped.

Hopefully this time the coach will actually get a DUI because obviously he hasn't learned his lesson.

Twitter Used to Spread the Word about DUI Checkpoints

In Arizona this past weekend, cops were out doing their job by conducting DUI checkpoints to help deter drunk drivers. That's right, I said deter drunk drivers.

Twitter users thought they would give other drivers a heads up, thereby thwarting the officer's efforts. However, what they did was actually help the officers achieve their goal.

MADD has long supported high-visibility law enforcement efforts. In fact, it is part of its Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving. However, what most fail to realize is that the point of these efforts isn't to catch drunk drivers, but rather to prevent drunk drivers from getting on the road at all. The idea is, if a driver hears about a DUI checkpoint, then they might make safer choices when it comes to drinking and driving.

Bottom line: People are less likely to get behind the wheel of a car if the perceived risk of getting caught is heightened and that is a good thing. So tweet away ...

DUI Crackdown Activities Begin Across the Nation

Last week, the Secretary of the Department of Transportation Ray LaHood announced the beginning of this year's DUI enforcement activities. States across the nation are conducting increased enforcement patrols designed to catch drunk drivers leading up to Labor Day weekend, traditionally a time of increased drunk driving activity.

Arizona has already reported that it made 306 arrests after the first weekend of this year's Labor Day DUI Crackdown.

Burress Sentence Puts Focus Back on Stallworth Sentence

Yesterday, New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress accepted a plea bargain with a two-year prison sentence for accidentally shooting himself in the thigh at a Manhattan nightclub. Just last month, Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth was released from a Miami jail after serving 24 days for DUI manslaughter.

As the news of Burress' sentence came down, the online world immediately questioned how one man who shot himself could get a sentence so much more harsh than a man who actually killed another human.

While prosecutors and judges must always evaluate a number of factors when making plea bargains and determining sentencing for offenders, where does justice play a part? And perhaps most importantly, as both men serve as high-profile role models for future generations, what message are really sending to kids?

The Wall Street Journal reported today that while Wisconsin legislators are making efforts to deal with the state's anemic drunk driving laws, their progress is still well behind the rest of the states.

Wisconsin is currently the only state that treats a first offense DUI as a traffic citation, which means no real penalties are assessed until an offender happens to get busted twice. They also are one of only 10 states that do not allow sobriety checkpoints, a law enforcement tool proven to reduce fatalities by 20 percent.

Legislators are embracing ignition interlocks for all offenders. But until Wisconsin decides to make drunk driving a crime the first time, these solutions won't have the lifesaving effect experience by other states like New Mexico.

Repeat Offender Dad Drives Son Home Drunk from Baseball Game

According to the Minnesota Star-Tribune, a 44-year old father on probation for a previous drunk driving offense was pulled over after leaving a local ballpark with his son. Officers administered a breathalyzer test and arrested the man after he registered a .375 blood alcohol concentration for DUI and child endangerment.

I can't think of a better reason to mandate ignition interlocks than in a situation like this. Had the court given this offender an ignition interlock as a condition of his probation, he couldn't have gotten behind the wheel of his car drunk. Thankfully police officers were able to pull him over before he could kill or injure his son or someone else.

Wall Street Journal Blog Discusses "The Numbers" Behind Drunk Driving

Carl Bialik blogged on the debate on what defines drunk for purposes of drunk driving. Some members of the alcohol industry proclaim that "hard-core" drunk drivers make up the bulk of the drunk driving problem.

However, as explained in a blog post last month, the industry fails to account for the number of individuals seriously injured, not killed, by drunk drivers who wouldnt' classify as "hard-core" drunk divers. These crashes often cause just as much pain and anguish as those involving a death.

So, our efforts must address the entire drunk driving problem. Not just the part that the alcohol industry deems most important. After all, the tobacco industry never got to set the rules for itself. Why should the alcohol industry?

Drunk Driver Posts Drunk Pics on Facebook

A 20-year old woman, who is awaiting trial for reckless homicide and aggravated DUI charges after a collision that killed a motorcyclist, was stupid enough to post drunk pictures on her Facebook page landing her back in an Illinois courtroom this week.

As a condition of her bail, the defendant had been ordered not to consume alcohol or be around people who are drinking. Of course, she isn't even old enough to drink legally. So doing so would be criminal with or without the bail violation.

The judge in the case ordered a SCRAM bracelet, a device that goes around an offenders ankle and measures alcohol. Unfortunately, the SCRAM bracelet won't stop this girl from getting behind the wheel of a car drunk like an ignition interlock device would.

Clearly her judgment is questionable and a much safer bet would be to make her install an interlock on her car.

Interlocks do work and people who drive drunk deserve them. Some want everyone to believe MADD stands for Mothers Against Drinking Daiquiris and that is just wrong. We're ok if you drink a daiquiri, we just want you to make sure you designate a sober driver before you do.

If we have vehicle features that already work overtime to protect and assist the driver, it only makes sense to add anti-drunk driving to that list. No one wants to share the roads with a drunk driver and nearly 13,000 people a year die because of drunk driving and so many more are injured. Bruce Smith DUI

According to AP reports, Bruce Smith, was charged with his third DUI on Friday. MADD calls on the judges reviewing the cases to uphold the ignition interlock laws and require them for Bruce's vehicle. Virginia requires interlocks for those offenders with a BAC of at least .15. Some segments of the alcohol industry would like all states focus on the .15+ offender versus requiring for all drunk driving convictions starting at .08. This is absurd given the illegal BAC level in all 50 states is .08. This is a level everyone has been found to be impaired behind the wheel of a vehicle. The Smith case is just another example of why it is so important to have interlocks installed the first go round in order to prevent subsequent offenses. Smith is a hall of famer defensive end now if he can employ to the best defense to end his drunk driving.

Despite Myths Sobriety Checkpoints Still Officers Best Tool to Catch Drunks

All but 10 states currently allow sobriety checkpoints. Two of those states--Wisconsin and Texas--have considered legislation that would enable law enforcement officers to use this proven DUI tactic.

According to local newspapers, Legislation allowing checkpoints has passed the Texas Senate but does not appear likely to reach a vote in the House. Similarly, despite a call to action by Wisconsin Governor Joe Doyle, lawmakers there see no chance of a sobriety checkpoint bill gaining traction this session.

Sobriety checkpoints are a key part of MADD's Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving. Studies have shown that when properly used, they reduce fatalities by 20%.

Sobriety checkpoint facts:

If the checkpoints are conducted properly, cars are pulled over at random according to their order in the sequence.
Law-abiding people are sent on their way within minutes. The average stop time is about the length of a cycle at a stop light.
Police must have a reason to believe the driver stopped at a checkpoint has been drinking before a breath test can be conducted.

Parent Arrested for After Prom Party

It's prom time and that means parents must start thinking about evening wear, corsages, and the dreaded after-prom party. A Florida father was arrested this week for hosting a post-prom party that he is accused of serving alcohol to dozens of teenagers at.

And just like we hear so often, the father took away the kids keys in order to keep them safe. Yet, teenagers who drink can injure themselves and other innocent members of your community. They’re more likely to be involved in:

Homicides
Suicides
Falls, burns and drowning

Kids who reported that a parent or a friend’s parent had provided alcohol at a party within the past year reported drinking more on their last drinking occasion and were twice as likely to have engaged in binge drinking.

If that fact doesn't scare you, it should. Frequent binge drinkers are more likely to:

engage in risky behaviors
use other drugs including marijuana and cocaine
have sex with six or more partners

7 Year Old Boy Victim of Ticket-Fixing Fiasco

Last month, we talked about the current investigation going on in Johnston County, North Carolina where six officers of the court have been accused of tampering with court documents to secure illegal dismissals for drunken drivers.

The real consequences of those actions are coming to light this week as the trial begins for a 31- year old man who killed 7-year old Marcus Lassiter in an apparent drunk driving crash. The man had charged with DUI four times prior to the crash.

Two of the charges were dismissed, one was reduced, and the fourth was pending. The defense attorney in both dismissed DWI cases was Lee Hatch, and the prosecutor in one was Cyndi Jaeger. They are among six people who have been charged in the Johnston County ticket-fixing case.

And now, they have poor Marcus Lassiter's blood on their hands.

Why .08? The age old debate

.08 blood alcohol concentration or BAC is the illegal threshold that determines whether or not a driver is drunk or not. For year, numerous groups like the American Beverage Institute have assaulted this number, alleging that impairment doesn't begin until .10 or even .14.

Recently, MADD has fought for ignition interlock devices for all convicted drunk drivers and this debate has resurfaced.

However, a recent story out of Washington State reminds us that at .08 virtually everyone is truly impaired.

Two weeks ago, Lisa Close welcomed baby Kaleb into her family. Kaleb survived four months in his mother's womb after she was hit by drunk driver and left in a coma. The driver was arrested and registered a .09 BAC.

ABI has sent out numerous press releases nationwide attacking MADD's efforts to require ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers. They like to point out that data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that the average BAC of a drunk driver in a fatal car crash is .18.

But what about those who are severely injured like Lisa Close and baby Kaleb. Aren't they worthy of protecting as well?

At the end of the day, .08 is drunk. It's not individuals who had a glass of wine with dinner. It's individuals who put all of us at risk when they get behind the wheel of a car.

Colorado Loophole Makes State Legislators Immune from DUI Arrest

According to CBS 4 in Denver, a provision of Colorado's Constitution makes legislators privileged from arrest for any non-felony crimes, including DUI. As we blogged about last week, it seems that more and more public officials are breaking the law these days.

It is disconcerting that a legal loophole exists that makes politicians immune from prosecution. Politicians should be more accountable, not less.

The Colorado legislature should take the necessary steps to remedy this injustice, sooner rather than later.

Politicians Breaking Laws Instead of Making Them

As of late, it seems like there has been an inordinate amount of news stories about politicians driving drunk. There was a former Congressman in New York, a state senator in Alabama, and a and an Oklahoma City council member. A state representative in Wisconsin was busted with his 3rd DUI in December of last year.

The Austin American Statesman published a story in March of this year regarding Texas politicians refusing breathalyzer tests. The story reported that while among the general public the refusal rate is about 50 percent, among politicians the refusal rate is about 100 percent.

It's always disappointing to see those who help craft our laws act in careless disregard for them. It's even worse when they try to use their own knowledge of the legal system to exploit loopholes and avoid punishment.

Wouldn't it be nice to see our politicians act nobly and take responsibility for their actions? If Charles Barkley can do it, so can they.
